Garage sale will benefit boy's educational fund Continued from page 1 7 · Friday, June 11, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Vacations Made You Feel Guilty About Leaving Mom Alone bloodstream," Finnegan said. She passed away Saturday evening. Now, Julian, a single child, is about to graduate Grade 8 from Montclair Public School. Because of her medical condition, Susie was unable to afford insurance for herself and there are no savings left behind either. So Finnegan, along with Julian's friends and family, will conduct a yard sale this Saturday outside the boy's home. All the money raised will go towards an education fund for Julian. When Finnegan found out that there were no savings and no insurance money for Julian, she went through the house. "I thought, well let's just sell the stuff instead of just getting rid of everything," she said. "Julian is going to move on. He's going to have a guardian family looking after him and we didn't know at the time all the details." Julian is currently living with Wayne Schnur. Schnur knows Julian through the local Big Brothers Big Sisters program and they have been together for several years now. When plans were made for the sale, suddenly the community came together and people began dropping off things for sale. "I have people dropping off things at my house whom I've never met," said Finnegan. There were also donations made by businesses and there will be Tim Hortons coffee, as well as a barbecue. Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll and resident Stephen Bright have also gotten involved with donations. "I think this is good," said Julian of all the people helping out his yard sale. "I'm really flattered." Of his mother, he said, "Her obvious thing in life was to make me happy and she talked to people about me. She was really excited about my Bar Mitzvah." Julian's Bar Mitzvah at Shaarei-Beth El Congregation will take place this summer. Finnegan added that the synagogue's Rabbi Stephen Wise was helpful through Julian's hard times. Susie's boyfriend Bruno, who was at the hospital when Susie was being treated, was on the phone with her father who told Bruno to call the rabbi. Finnegan said the rabbi arrived at the hospital instantly. "He was phenomenal. He was great. He was instrumental in bringing everyone together to help Julian." Julian's grandfather came from Florida to stay with Julian, as well. They spent the first few nights in Susie and Julian's home. "It's too uncomfortable to have to go "Susie lived and breathed that child. She was fanatical about him getting dirty. She was over protective. She was always there and always making sure he was well taken care of in every way." Kathleen Finnegan, friend and neighbour of Susie Rotenberg n through that and I just said, `Come and stay here, please. We have tons of room.'" Finnegan said. So Julian spent some time in Finnegan's home. "My son Hudson just loved that whole idea," she added. "Julian is like a big brother to him and he didn't want to let Julian go. He was just like, `Why can't you live here forever Julian?'" Finnegan met the Rotenbergs in 2004 when she moved to Oakville. And she was in a similar situation as Susie, being a single mother. "They were basically there since my son was born and Hudson is now five," she said. "My son has grown up with Julian. Julian and Hudson are close. We've spent every Christmas, Easter, birthdays; everything we've done together as a family, including my family and Susie and her family." Finnegan also noted that Susie loved her son dearly and she made sure that he had the contacts he does today. She got him a Big Brother and set him up in an outreach centre for children. "Susie lived and breathed that child," Finnegan said. "She was fanatical about him getting dirty. She was over protective. She was always there and always making sure he was well taken care of in every way." Because Julian will be living with the Schnurs he will be attending T. A. Blakelock High School, closer to his new home, instead of White Oaks Secondary School, which he would have been attending under different circumstances. Julian said he was saddened at first to leave his friends behind. However, he lived in a different part of Oakville until he finished Grade 5 and it turns out that he will be attending high school with the friends he had in his earlier school years. "Julian is doing well," Finnegan said. "He's sad. He seems quite sad, but if you ask him, he'll say, `I'm okay'." The sale will happen on the lawn of the townhouse complex where Julian and his mother lived at 1531 Sixth Line from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is also a trust account for Julian at Royal Bank, with an account number of: 03592 5040928.
