Halton Cowboys atom quarterback Garrett Holmes scored two touchdowns last weekend in his team's Ontario Minor Football League home opener against the Mississauga Warriors, bringing his season tally up to eight scores in four games. Through the Go Garrett Go campaign, each TD Garrett runs or passes for this season results in $1,100 in pledges for the Children's Miracle Network or Free The Children charities. That means Holmes has raised $8,800 for the charities so far and is on pace to raise approximately $22,000 for the season. All money for the Children's Miracle Network will go towards the hospital of each donor's choice. Free The Children is partnering with organizations in Haiti to provide emergency relief and support rebuilding efforts in the months to come. Anyone interested in pledging to the campaign is invited to log onto www.gogarrettgo.com. Atoms tie Mississauga Garrett's two touchdowns and 200-plus rushing yards Saturday also helped the Cowboys earn an 18-18 draw against the Mississauga Warriors. Jordyn Gallardo scored Halton's other touchdown, running in from two yards out. Five other Cowboys teams were also in action last weekend at King's Christian Collegiate. The tyke and peewee OMFL teams played on Saturday, while the peewee, junior varsity and varsity Ontario Varsity Football League squads took the field Sunday. The tyke Cowboys dropped an 1812 decision to the Mississauga Warriors in the first game for many of the Halton players. Quarterback Christian Smodis scored both Cowboys touchdowns, one of them set up by a fumble recovery by defenders Peter Nkongolo and Noah Rombough. The peewee Cowboys were down only two points after three quarters but eventually fell 40-24 to the Etobicoke Eagles. QB Steven Aichele connected with Brandon Roberts for three touchdowns and also tossed a TD pass to Andrew McClean. In OVFL action, the peewees' lone bright spot in a 56-6 loss to the Cambridge Lions came on an 80-yard rushing touchdown by Will Ellis. The junior varsity Cowboys were dropped 28-1 by the Essex Ravens. Darnell Thompson recovered a fumble and returned it 30 yards for Halton in a losing cause, while Cole Munden contributed nine solo tackles and six assists. The varisty Cowboys allowed only three points in the second half but lost 27-3 to Essex. The ball barely eluded goatlender Cassandra Dejonge's outstretched arms and ended her bid at five consecutive shutouts, but earlier goals by Nikolina Rajcevic, Danielle Samuels and Michele Olson more than offset that in Oakville's 3-1 win. Earlier in the tournament, Oakville defeated Ancaster B 4-0 (with Christina Gogos scoring 11 seconds into the game), downed Burlington 2-0, tied Flamborough 0-0 and blanked Saltfleet 2-0 (both goals by Megan Segeren). Other members of the squad are Emmie Yurchuk, Olivia Sant, Natasha Susman, Samantha Creighton, Raven Clemons, Ania Marushkevych, Jessica Desaulets, Haley Mayer, Emily Smith and Lauren Dryburgh.
