Proceeds will support the purchase of essential equipment for the Mental Health program at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) and the Day Program in Oakville. Event organizers, Oakville residents Frank Zamuner and his wife Lea, have several goals for this event including raising awareness about mental health illnesses and eliminating the stigma attached to them. With help from family, friends and the community of Oakville, Zamuner will build upon the successes achieved in 2009 and once again complete his goal of swimming 1,000 lengths of the pool and raising money for the Mental Health inpatient department at OTMH and Day Program in Oakville. "In 2005 I had a triple bypass operation. When I came home after surgery to recover, I found it very hard not to do anything as I was a very active person before the surgery. I had a difficult time sleeping and eventually I got depressed," said Zamuner. "While looking for help I found out how great a need there is for psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and related medical equipment. Depression does not discriminate; it affects people from all walks of life, young and old, rich and poor. I have been fortunate to receive excellent care from OTMH and found out that it helps to be active when you suffer from depression. Simply put, I feel better after swimming." From swimming every day, Zamuner realized he could turn his joyful activity into a fun and unique fundraiser to help patients of OTMH's Mental Health Program and Oakville's Day Program. Recently, Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn showed his support and volunteered to be a dunk tank participant at the Swim for Mental Health booth at Midnight Madness on July 16. Thanks to the participants that dunked Kevin and many others, more than $1,100 was raised that night. Support for this event is also being received from local companies such as the Goodale Miller Century 21 Team who are the presenting sponsor, BMO Nesbitt Burns who is the silver sponsor, Swiss Chalet (Cross Ave. location) OAKVILLE BEAVER FILE PHOTO TACKLING STIGMA: Frank Zamuner and a group of supporters achieved his goal of swimming 1,000 lengths of the pool at Brookdale Pool for the first annual Swim for Mental Health last year. Now, he'll do it again in 2010. and TheTentRenters.com who are the bronze sponsors. To date more than $16,000 has been raised (surpassing last year's total), but the Zamuners have a goal of reaching $30,000 and they can't do it without the support of the community. Visit www.swimformentalhealth.com to learn more and find out how you can get involved. The Swim for Mental Health fundraiser will take place from Monday, Aug. 9 to Friday, Aug. 13 between the hours of 12:302 p.m. Zamuner is calling upon the community of Oakville to support him anyway that they can, from pledging him, to making a donation, to helping him complete his goal of 1,000 lengths of the pool. All are also welcome to come down to Brookdale Swimming Pool to cheer him on. For more information on Swimming for Mental Health, visit www.swimformentalhealth.com.
