"There are more than 14,000 people who live at or below the poverty line in Oakville. Those were statistics that were done before the recession," said Ward. "We have ongoing food drives, so our efforts have geared up at churches. We try to stage them over the course of the year to create reliable stream." While the number of people in Oakville that live in poverty is equivalent to roughly seven per cent of the population in most local neighbourhoods, it represents 20 per cent of Kerr Village's population. Benjamin Ward, executive director, Kerr Street Ministries NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER EMPTY: Kerr Street Ministries food bank is currently experiencing a shortage in food donations. After this Saturday, they will be empty. Few people realize that the food bank gives out $100,000 worth of food in a single month. bring in right now are canned fruits and vegetables, rice, healthy cereal, diapers and pasta sauce. They are also accepting cash donations. Those are the highest priority items, says Ward. "The challenge is we have so many more clients as well and our shelves are bare. I think a lot of people think of food banks and hunger at Christmas and Thanksgiving, and they don't realize we go through over 500 loaves of bread on a daily basis," said Jodi Yielding, communications manager for Kerr Street Ministries. "We have this huge, huge shortage right now." "It's a pretty simple story. We're just unable to provide for the high number of people coming through our doors," said Ward. There are three ways to help alleviate the food shortage. Cash donations can be made online through the website at: www.kerrstreet.com/. Payments by mail can be sent to: Kerr Street Ministries, 485 Kerr Street, Oakville, ON, L6K 3C6. Cheques can be made out to: Kerr St. Ministries. The third option is to drop off food at 485 Kerr Street during their hours of operation from Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tax receipts will be issued for all donations $20 and above.
