The 20th annual Take Back the Night event is slated for tomorrow (Thursday) at the Velocity Youth Centre in Burlington and features speaker Preeya Rateja, a survivor of violence. Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services of Halton (SAVIS), in partnership with Halton Community Legal Services, Halton Regional Police, Halton Women's Place, The Women's Centre, Nina's Place and the AIDS Network will host Take Back the Night. The annual event symbolizes a woman's right to walk at night with- out fear of violence or harassment. It aims to raise awareness of vio- lence against women and children. Take Back The Night 2010 will be an inclusive, family-friendly event since we know that violence affects us all, said Carolyn Cameron, SAVIS Take Back the Night co-ordinator. The event will include singers, dancers, a martial arts demonstra- tion, community information booths, children's face painting and an anti-violence march. Only the march, taking place at the end of the night, is for women and children only. We know violence transcends the boundaries of race, ethnicity, religion, age, ability, class, sexual orientation and gender. Take Back the Night is an opportunity to say No to violence against women, said Cameron. Take Back The Night 2010 takes place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Velocity Youth Centre, 3230 Fairview St., at Prospect Street, behind Burlington Mall, between Dynes Road and Cumberland Avenue. The event is free. For more information, call SAVIS at 905-825-3622, e-mail savis@savisofhalton.org or visit www.savisofhalton.org. Take Back the Night tomorrow
