The concert, titled Hear Freedoms Ring, will take place on Friday, Oct. 8 at St. Simons Anglican Church, located at 1450 Litchfield Rd. Toby will explain some of the history of the Underground Railroad, which blacks in the U.S. used to escape north to Canada, where slavery was abolished in the early 1800s. Because blacks could not read or write, and it was illegal to teach them to do so, black people used a variety of methods to communicate, Toby said in a press release. One such form of commu- nication was the use of song. Slave songs, or spiri- tuals, were not considered dangerous by slave masters. These songs were full of codes or secret mes- sages, which allowed the slaves to communicate with each other about where, when and how to escape. Songs were part of their daily lives, Toby said in the release. Plantation owners liked the slaves to sing because it meant they were work- ing and helped the plantation owners to keep track of them. He adds that two common types of songs were signal songs and map songs. For example, the song Follow the Drinking Gourd referred to the Big Dipper star constellation, which contains the North Star, which acted as a compass. Toby notes Oakville has plenty to celebrate for its two Underground Railroad heroes in Captain Robert Wilson and James Wesley Hill, both of whom helped countless blacks escape to Canada. The concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $25 Meet the artists at CJs Cafct. 5 CJs Cafn Bronte will hold an art show and on Tuesday, Oct. 5 people will have a chance to meet the artists at an opening reception.
