However, a chal- lenge will be to keep developers from making amendments to the plan. He added too much time and effort was spent on achieving an accept- able Official Plan that would work for everyone to let it be changed by developers. He said another challenge is stopping developers from building residences in employment-zoned lands, so that there are job opportunities in the community. He added sites with an employment lands sta- tus must remain that way and council must not allow developers to build residences where employment is supposed to be. McMullen, agreed with the sentiment of upholding the Official Plan and the towns zon- ing bylaws. He added council must not bend to develop- ers wishes and strive to achieve proper design for the area and development must be in keeping with the character of the village. The three candidates running for town and regional council agreed that there will be prob- lems with growth, but all agreed that those prob- lems must be diligently mitigated. Oliver said growth will create traffic conges- tion and reduce parking space. But, she said growth will also bring new jobs and a new tax base and the development charges will finance new services. Her counterpart Aceti, added to the senti- ment, saying, We will have traffic problems and congestion if we do not integrate transit services into our sustainable community planning model. Aceti said the town needs a good plan to accommodate growth and there needs to be a strategy to promote Oakville and Halton Region as a good place to bring green industry jobs. Johnston said the biggest problem facing growth is making sure developers pay for it. I will continue to support the policy that growth needs to pay for itself through develop- ment charges, so that you and I as residents dont pay those costs. He supported the 60 per cent increase in development charges and that he will work to bring in new jobs, which will bring with them tax revenues.
