Two years ago, the local resident turned down the Ontario Hockey League, choosing instead to pursue a NCAA scholarship by playing Tier 2 in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. That choice recently paid off as Domagala accepted a scholarship offer from Holy Cross, a Division 1 school located near Boston. The 18-year-old defenceman, drafted by the OHLs Kingston Frontenacs in 2008, admits he second-guessed himself at times over the last couple years. There was a period of time there. I knew a lot of players who were drafted and signed with the OHL and were taking the next step in their hockey careers, while I was still stuck in Junior A. I did won- der if I made the right decision, Domagala said. I just stuck with it. I kept seeing that people committing to the NCAA were typically older players anyway. Ultimately, at the end of the day, I knew waiting it out would pay off. Domagala has played for the Villanova Knights the last couple seasons after playing his rookie year with the Burlington Cougars. He has flourished as an offen- sive defenceman, notching 34 points in 42 games last season and collecting 15 points in 20 games so far this year. Domagala considered several schools in the north- eastern U.S, but decided Holy Cross was the best fit for him. Last year, I first had contact with them. Before that, I really wasnt familiar with the school at all, Domagala said. After I talked to one of their coaches and did some research on the Internet, I figured out it was a great school, both academics and the hockey side. Domagala is currently in his fifth year at St. Ignatius of Loyola, where he has been an honours stu- dent since Grade 9. The scholarship at Holy Cross begins in 2012. Domagala said he might play in the United States Hockey League next season to prepare himself for NCAA hockey. Paul Jeffery, Alan Clark and Tim Parsons coach the team, Ron Nugent is the trainer and Aaron Mahoney is the manager. Novices win Detroit tournament Unbeaten in Tri-County play this season, the Oakville novice AA Rangers already knew they were pretty good against teams in their own age group. As it turns out, theyre pretty good against older squads as well. The Rangers won the champi- onship at the recent Motown Cup tournament in Detroit despite play- ing against opponents a year older. Oakville outscored its opposition 15- 7 to go undefeated in three round- robin games, then defeated Victory Honda 1-0 in the final.
