Can you undo effects of chronic stress? Many people find relief through exercise, travel, hobbies, or by expanding their personal and social activities. Diet is also very important. Dr. Joyce Johnson explains, Stress can be caused by, and can cause, nutrient deficiencies. Before resorting to medications, I advise patients to improve their diets and take natural stress-supportive sup- plements. A balanced formulas of B vitamins can protect nervous sys- tem health and help prevent stress- related illness. She adds, "There are adapto- genic herbs that help shut off the stress response and normalize cor- tisol production. Dance is a part of my life and I don't think I'll ever be able to part from it. On top of giving it their all in rehearsals just like their Olympic-cali- bre counterparts in the sports world funding is an issue for these dancers, said Lynne McCarthy, who owns the McCarthy School of Dance in Burlington, where Chai and her fellow teammates are stu- dents. The cost to compete is $3,500, which covers accommodation, coaching, flight, and food, among other expenses. Team members are footing their own bill, but between school and training are also seeking sponsors individually to help offset the costs. Sadly, dance is not recognized as an Olympic sport in Canada, even though these athletes are as disciplined, training seven days a week, said McCarthy. In 1997, the International Olympic Committee recognized dancesport (ballroom dancing) as a sport, but it has yet to be included as an official event at any Games including the 2012 summer Olympics to be held in London, England. In Canada, dance is considered to be more of a recreational sport, but in the U.S. and Europe, its work that leads to a career and so competition is a lot tougher with them, said McCarthys daughter and fellow Team Canada coach, Kathrine. This is the first year Canada has entered a junior ballet team in the world competition that is overseen by the International Dance Organization, which claims a membership of more than 90 nations representing more than 250,000 dancers from six continents.
