Vol. 48 No. 133 USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2010 SNA NEWSPAPER OF THE YEAR 2010 Rocking ArtsceneONTARIOS TOP NEWSPAPER - 2005-2008 By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF While Town Council acted Monday night to ensure Oakville Hydro never makes another political contribution, it will wait until the new year to decide whether to investigate the $17,500 in donations by the corporation to the Ontario Liberal Party in 2008 and 2009. The matter will be heard again at the first council meeting of the new year on Jan. 17. By then, Town staff are expected to have more information regarding the form the inquiry should take and the costs involved. Oakville Hydros contributions to the Liberal Party of $8,000 in 2008 and $9,500 in 2009 for the purchase of 10 seats each year at the annual Liberal Heritage Dinner in Toronto, drew considerable atten- tion Monday night with nearly 200 people packing Town Halls council chamber. The issue has been a heated one as Oakville Hydro is wholly owned by the Town of Oakville and thus by its citizens. At the beginning of the council meeting, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton tried to bring forward his own motion regarding the Oakville Hydro situation. This was challenged as improper procedure by Ward 5 Town and Regional Councillor Jeff Knoll, who wanted his own motion on the issue heard first. Knoll received heavy applause from the audience Town nixes future Hydro political donations New council will decide whether to investigate See Council page 3 By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakvilles Alex Rothwell certainly didnt expect to find what he did while cleaning out the cabinet under the bathroom sink Tuesday morn- ing. In between and underneath all the household chemicals, he found a very tiny scorpion. It was sitting under some chem- icals and we dont know where it came from, the 19-year-old said of his unlikely find. Alex and his mother Violet Greene spent a year in Costa Rica prior to moving to the Oakville apartment building about a year ago. They have seen these creatures in Costa Rica, but never in Canada and they do not know where their scor- pion came from. They wonder whether it came through cracks in the walls. If people are travelling, because theyre so tiny, they can come in clothes, and people might bring them here, said Violet. In Costa Rica, people are taught to be aware and to shake out their clothes. Alexs uncle, Dave Rothwell, who has lived in the area for 20 years said this is the first time hes seen a scor- pion here.
