not only completed the Rwanda project, but also another in Tanzania. This year, the $100,000 target will go to complete the final of a three-year project in another area of Tanzania. Whether its the challenge of taking a dip on New Years Day, the cause of fresh water for those in desperate need or a combination of all, the dip has become a great way to wake up and start a new year. Its contagious, said Trent. The Courages recently kicked off this years dip promotion by accepting a $12,000 donation from Tin Cup Sports Grill, which raised the cash in two golf tournaments it hosted through its Oakville and Burlington locations last summer. Tin Cup in Oakville hosts a post-dip warmup party, too. And while the polar bear dip is all about jumping into freezing cold water and running out into freezing cold air, it leaves you with a warm heart and a fresh perspective. The Courages are also doing everything they can to keep those who participate warm. A wristband system will be implemented to arrange dippers in waves as they enter the water. Were doing everything to minimize the wait, said Trent. Last year, pre-registration at the Courage brothers business at 2380 Speers Rd., also helped to reduce wait times in registra- tion lines. This year, the pre-registration is being expanded to three days, Dec. 28, 29 and 30. Some things are remaining the same howev- er. There will be the popular costume contest again this year and it will begin earlier. The event is set to run from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. with the dip at 2 p.m. The Courages urge people to enjoy the enter- tainment (the blues band Walen is returning) and spend less time getting cold in lineups. The usual pre-dip event will take place, too where the brothers and others climb into a hot tub in Coronation Park to promote the event with Breakfast Television and its host Jennifer Valentyne (a long-time dip and World Vision supporter who also documented the Courages trip to Rwanda with Word Vision last year) and be broadcast Dec. 21. Dip volunteer Scott Mills has so impressed his son with the dip that young Adam Mills, 10, a Grade 5 student has been getting involved with the dip and broadcasting its mission in social media circles to the point where hes attract- ing a polar cub team to take the plunge. The dip has a website www.polarbeardip.ca and has an increased presence in social media this year, too. The Courages want to hear from anyone whod like to take part, sponsor or donate to the dip. Trent said people continue to post YouTube videos throughout the year and now people can join the conversation via Facebook and Twitter. After registering, collecting pledges, organiz- ing a costume and planning how to stay warm, the most important thing a dipper can do wear water shoes. Water shoes are a brilliant idea, said Todd. The Courages said the dip is not bad, but it hurts the feet a lot.
