Its hard to argue the effectiveness of a program when its being headed by peo- ple at the top of their industry. Sheridan Colleges Bachelor of Applied Arts Illustration program has two such individuals. A pair of its faculty members has been named among the 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide by Ls Archive. Program co-ordinator Joe Morse and professor Thom Sevalrud have made that list and their award-winning work will appear in the Ls Archive 2011/12 book. Ls is an international magazine and book publisher for advertising, com- munication and design, with offices in Vienna. Top illustrators are selected on the basis of professional work that distin- guishes itself through the originality of the idea and the quality of execution. The Archive, which will be published in early 2011, will feature the best work produced by illustrators over the past two years. Morse is an award-winning illustrator. His work has appeared in newspapers and magazines worldwide, including The Globe and Mail, Rolling Stone, The Times of London, Esquire, GQ and The New York Times. His clients include Major League Baseball, Nike, Universal Pictures and Target. The recipient of more than 100 international awards, his artwork is included in numerous international col- lections, including the private collection of the filmmaker Spike Lee. Morses most recent illustrated book, Play Ball, Jackie! will be published in March 2011. Sevalrud is also an award-winning illustrator. Sheridan faculty named top world illustrators by Lurzers His work has appeared in a wide variety of interna- tional publications, from Business Week to German Vogue, and he also produces images for clients in book publishing, graphic design and corporate communica- tions. His book covers have been commissioned for mar- kets in Italy, Germany and Great Britain. The Southern Ontario Music Chamber Music Institute (SOCMI) program, which will take place in Oakville this summer, has added new faculty members. Joining SOCMI are the members of the award-winning Cecilia String Quartet, which has frequently performed in Oakville, to help instruct music stu- dents. The intense 2011 residential program is designed for individuals playing at a minimum of the Royal Conservatory of Musics Grade 8 level or equivalent. The program will run from July 31 to Aug. 7 at Appleby College. The quartet placed second at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in 2008 and won first place at the Tenth Banff International String Quartet Competition in September, an accomplishment not achieved by a Canadian quartet since 1992. Two of its members are SOCMI alum- nae and former Hamiltonians. They are violist Caitlin Boyle and cellist Rachel Desoer. Violinists Min-Jeong Koh and Sarah Nematallah complete the ensem- ble. Program to be instructed by award-winning quartet The Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre will play host to a travelling exhibit from the neighbouring municipality of Peel Region with an exhibit that opens Saturday, Jan. 8. The centre will display the Peel Heritage Complexs permanent collection, which will be hitting the road in 2011, starting with the Oakville stop. Featured in this special exhibit are donations from John and Gisela Sommer, who operated Gallery House Sol for four decades out of their Georgetown home, said Diane Allengame, acting manager of the heritage complex, in a press release. The Sommers offered many artists the first expo- sure for their work. The Sommer family donated close to 200 works of contemporary and historic printmaking to the com- plex, along with examples of photography, sculpture and painting. Some well-known area artists will be featured at the exhibit. They include: Jack Bush, Jack Chambers, A. J. Casson and Barker Fairley. The exhibit will be open until Feb. 6. An opening reception will take place on Jan. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. It will feature discussion from John and Gisela Sommer and Judy Daley, acting curator of the heritage com- plex. Neighbouring art collection visits Joshua Creek Ensemble Partners with Food Bank: The Oakville Ensemble has announced that it has entered into a partnership with Oakvilles Fareshare food bank. The ensemble will be accepting non-perishable food donations at its concerts this season in order to support people in the community.
