Grannies need help in AfricaYou can help grandmothers here help their counterparts in Africa.The second annual Stride to Turn the Tide event will take place across the country on weekends between May 14 and June 12.You can join the Halton Team of Grandmothers to Grandmothers on Saturday, June 11 as it walks in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF).The foundation seeks to raise aware-ness and mobilize support in Canada for Africa's grandmothers. The campaign was launched on March 7, 2006, on the eve of International Women's Day.Since the launch, about 240 groups of Canadian grandmothers have raised more than $10 million for African grandmothers and the children in their care. Why not try the new seniors outrigger canoe paddling program at the Wai Nui club?This program is open to seniors who are comfortable on the water and would like to try paddling in a six person canoe. Starting on May 31, sessions will run from 1-2 p.m. every Tuesday after-noon for five weeks. Outrigger is a Hawaiian sport that is becoming popular in North America. Outrigger canoes have six seats and a pontoon along the left side of the boat that provides increased stability. Wai Nui, a successful outrigger club that has won numerous awards at international events, offers both competitive and rec-reational paddling to people of all ages and abilities. The club is situated on Sixteen Mile Creek, under the Rebecca Street bridge in Oakville.
