It will be Hatches Open all weekend on the Anitra, which will be moored at her home berth at the Oakville Club. The classic wooden, gaff-rigged schooner was designed and built in 1926 by Montye Macrae and has been sailing out of the Oakville Club for 85 years under the Macrae family burgee. Macraes earlier ships had been named Adanac, but the new boats sleek, exotic lines suggested to an early visitor the character of the Egyptian dancing girl in Peer Gynt, and she was christened Anitra. She proved to be a fast competi- tor, and now flies some 100 racing pennants, including the esteemed 1939 Prince of Wales Cup. The Anitra was also fitted out for comfort, albeit cramped com- fort, with eight berths, a kitchen and icebox, and a head. Her 40-feet of oak frame and cedar planking has stood the test of time. Her rig, reminiscent of the old schooners of Oakville, is a regular, and pretty, sight on Lake Ontario. Montyes grandson Jamie is the current keeper of the Anitra, and will welcome you aboard to share a tour, archival photographs and sto- ries of the Queen of the Lake.
