How do you make todays youths under- stand just how many sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, families were lost to big- otry and hate? Oakville resident and Mississauga high school teacher Susan Carey, struggled with these questions for some time before landing on a project, which she hopes will make the Holocaust more tangible for her students. I came up with this because a student a number of years ago had raised his hand in my history class and had said, Whats the Holocaust? and Whos Anne Frank, said Carey. This was a Grade 10 history class. This student was 16 years old and I was abso- lutely dumbfounded that someone in this day and age would have no clue about this. In response, Carey has championed a penny project at Mississaugas St. Marcellinus Secondary School, which seeks to collect 13 million pennies. The idea is that each penny represents a single victim of the Holocaust. The Holocaust, which was perpetrated by Nazi Germany and its allies largely dur- ing the Second World War (1939-1945), saw the deaths of approximately six mil- lion Jews, two to three million Soviet prisoners-of-war (POWs), 1.8 to two mil- lion ethnic Polish people, 220,000-1.5 mil- lion Romani, 200,000-250,000 disabled people, 80,000 Freemasons, 20,000-25,000 Slovenes, 5,000-15,000 homosexuals and 2,500-5,000 Jehovahs Witnesses. The thought behind the project is that by actually seeing 13 million of something, students will be one step closer to under- standing the Holocausts scope. The other good thing about pennies is they are very accessible, said Carey. The youngest child and the oldest senior can be part of this because I didnt envision this just being Ms. Careys history project, but something that could be expanded beyond the classroom, beyond the school and beyond the school board into the wider community, said Carey. It really caught on. We meet every Wednesday after school in my classroom and roll pennies that have been collected during the previous week. We have one of the Legion branches on board. We have churches and synogoges on board, we have officers in the Town government, different civic organizations have joined us. Weve had contributions from Winnipeg to Ottawa and from the United States. Since beginning the project in 2008, fPenny project to bring home horror o Holocaust the penny project has raised more than 700,000 pennies ($7,000). When the 13 million penny goal is reached, Carey said the funds will be used to fund genocide education and aware- ness and relief programs. Carey said she and her students also want to create a memorial not only in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, but as a thank you to the veterans who fought and died to liberate them and as a warning to students about where preju- dice and ignorance can lead. Elie Wiesel said, Genocide does not begin with the killing, it begins with the hate. If we dont break down those pat- terns of hate, at whatever level, there is always a danger of something like the Holocaust erupting, said Carey. The penny project seeks to raise its total to one million pennies by November and anyone interested in donating their pennies or finding out more can contact Carey at St. Marcellinus Secondary School when it reopens in September at 905-564- 6614.
