But, as their name would suggest, they continue to haunt Ontario opponents. With a lineup that included nine members of the highly successful former rep team, the Oakville Soccer Club won the Ontario Cup womens under-21 title on Sunday. It may not have been the kind of dominating performance that saw the Phantoms finish atop the Ontario Youth Soccer League for five straight years, but in the end they got the job done with a 1-0 victory over Markham Sunday in Vaughan. Its a short season; weve only got a couple of months to play, said coach Peter Uremovich. Its definitely one of those things that the team bonded so well, they continued to win. Its a habit. Karly Dagys, who was a conference all-star in her sophomore season at Southeastern Louisiana University, scored the games only goal a nice left foot into the bottom corner, as her coach described it midway through the first half. As much as weve left and gone to different schools, when we come back, its like we never left, Dagys, a Holy Trinity grad, said. Oakville would generate few good chances after taking the lead. Meanwhile, Markham put on the pres- sure as it went after the equalizer. We were on our heels, Uremovich said, but our defence sacrificed and blocked shots and when they didnt, Taryn (McKenna) made some incredible saves. McKenna, who was an Atlantic University Sport all-star for Dalhousie University, was one of three original Phantoms on the under-21 squad. The former Aquinas student, Ali Palmer and Emily Maganja played together for nine years with the team. They were joined over the years by Dagys, Shelby Dawdy, Alicja Giftopoulos, Cara Cutaia, Sam McLaren and Michaela DiFazio as the Phantoms won two Ontario Cups, two provincial indoor titles and an Ontario Summer Games gold medal. These are the girls Ive grown up with, Dagys said. I played with some of them since under-9 or under-10. Playing with them is how I learned to play soccer. Its good to go experience something new (at school) but I love coming home to play in the sum- mer. Just two teams the U14 A girls and the U15 A boys remain alive in their respective playdowns. Both will play quarter-final contests next month. The U18 A girls nearly reached their division final, falling 3-0 to the Erin Mills Eagles in the semis. Erin Mills went on to blast the Markham Lightning 6-0 in the championship game.
