Rod Bemister was at the Oakville campus on Monday, Sept. 12 speaking with members, as stu- dents were beginning their second week back to school while the province-wide strike mandate is in effect. Ontario Public Service Employee Union (OPSEU) members at 24 Ontario colleges are on strike, including more than 400 at Sheridan. We shouldnt have to be out here, but weve got an employer thats inside whos said, Were not bargaining anymore. Weve put forward to them, as youve seen in the media releases, were ready to come back to the table any time, any- where. Well move on our items, he told people on the picket line. He added the union is willing to move on its demands and everything is on the table, but management also needs to be willing to move on its items. The two sides have not met since Aug. 31 and Bemister reminded people if anything was hap- pening he would not be able to travel campus to campus to speak with fellow strikers. He added the colleges claims that the union walked away from the table are not true. They say we walked from the table. Well, no. They walked away from the table as soon as they werent going to bargain anymore, he said. Theyre the ones who can get us back to the table. As long as theyre not willing to talk, were here. I say shame on them for not talking because we want to be inside the colleges pro- viding the services that we do. We know our services are important but obviously the col- leges have forgotten that. However, the College Employer Council (CEC) says the talks broke when the union went on strike. The union started the strike and walked away from the table, said David Scott, acting spokesperson for the CECs bargaining team. They rejected a good offer that was on the table of 4.8 per cent over three years. Scott said the union has issued a call to the colleges to return to the table with a fresh approach. Were more than happy to get back to the table because getting back to the table is going to get us in a negotiated settlement and well end this strike, Scott said. But, were not going to get back to the table until we have an assurance or some belief that the union is going to start to understand and appreciate the eco- fnomic challenges the colleges and the rest o the province are under. Scott said some of the unions demands are not affordable. They have not modified these positions substantively during any course of bargaining; particularly, the money hasnt changed since we started bargaining, he said. At the picket line, Bemister also heard from Sheridans OPSEU members. With reports of slow or cancelled services, the strikers told Bemister they are losing the support of the students and the public, being called such things as greedy. Furthermore, some members said the schools are saving money by paying part-time workers to fill their positions. However, the strike is about more than wage increases, Bemister said. Its not one thing on the table that does it for us. Its the combination, he said. Loss of job security is a concern, he said. Were saying that if we allow things to slide into our collective agreement that do not address our concerns around part-time work then in the future our good jobs arent going to be good jobs anymore because theyre not going to be secure, he said. He told the members that it is up to them and the students to put pressure on the college presidents to return the two parties to the table. He said pressure must also be put on the candidates in the provincial election. He urged everyone to email the school presidents and to attend election debates to question the candi- dates.
