Oakville young singing sensa- tion Catherine Brenan will sing the national anthem before the Budds BMW 10K event at the fifth annual Oakville Half Marathon later this month. The 10-year-old Brenan, a stu- dent at E.J. James Public School, was recently one of 10 finalists in the Canada's Walk of Fames A Song For Canada competition that had more than 600 entries nation- wide. The contest asked people to describe the true essence of the Canadian identity and what makes them proud to be Canadian. Brenan finished second with a song she called 'The Place That We Belong. An intermediate member of the Oakville Children's Choir, Brenan takes guitar lessons and hopes to have a future career in music. The Oakville Half Marathon, Budds BMW 10K and Whole Foods Market 2K Family Fun Run/Walk will take place Sunday, Sept. 25 in Coronation Park. Oakville won four of its six games at the competi- tion, with both the As losses coming at the hands of Niagara Falls the second coming in the semifinals. Niagara Falls, which defeated the As by 17-7 and 17-9 scores, went on to win the tournament. Oakvilles victories came over Guelph (13-3), York (19-6), Pickering (10-9) and Burlington (15-12). As catcher Justin Kurc clinched the tight win over Pickering by throwing out a base runner on an attempted steal to compete the game, with Oakville third baseman Joe Kruse applying the tag. Oakvilles other close victory came against Burlington as Joshua Wood and Daniel Freeman combined on a forceout, snuffing out a Burlington bases-loaded rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. As left fielder Riley Keenan also made a big play earlier in the game, making a diving catch to deny Burlington additional runs. Other highlights from the competition included strong pitching by Ryan Matsuba, Ross Peaker, Ethan MacDonald, Keenan and Freeman; four double plays by Wood; and two home runs by Dasan Brown. Also contributing with solid defensive play and timely hitting were Chris Vernon, Nicholas Miller and Logan Vickers. By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A single maple is light enough to be tossed around and carried away in the wind. Miana Griffiths knows it car- ries far more weight when youre wearing it on your chest. Wearing the (Canadian) uni- form is a huge privilege, Griffiths said after being named to the 4x100-metre relay team that will represent Canada next month at the Pan American Games in Mexico. You have a lot on your shoulders, everybody youre try- ing to win for, your teammates and country. Though running the 4x100m for Canada will be a first, she hopes to duplicate the success she had at last years NACAC (North America, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association) Under-23 championships when she and her teammates earned a bronze in the 4x400m. This race will be more in Griffiths comfort zone. A sprint specialist, she was fifth in the 100m at the national champion- f ships this year with a time o 11.61 and won the Ontario Youth Senior Championships in the 60m in 7.25 seconds. The 2011 Pan American Games still represent an important step- ping stone for many who have been selected to prove their abilities by competing and winning interna- tionally, said Canadian head coach Les Gramantik. The St. Thomas Aquinas grad will be joined by Kerri-Ann Mitchell, Krysha Bayley and Christie Gordon on the Canadian relay team. I think if we put our minds, and our speed, to it we can do a good time, Griffiths said. Though she has been troubled by three separate injuries a toe, knee and a bone in her thigh all on the same leg, Griffiths said she hopes to be closer to 100 per cent by the time she heads to Guadalajara for the Pan Am Games, which begin Oct. 23. It started about three months ago, the 21 year old said. Its healing up, but Ive been compet- ing at the same time. Its not that bad now. ff h l k f dGri it s oo s orwar to running for Canada at Pan Am Games Youngster to sing anthem at half marathon
