It was really touching because they knew she was doing it for a charity, said Theresa. With her mothers assistance, Taylor was able to make 60 to 70 of the friendship bracelets, Theresa said, and also fabricated a lot of bookmarks, but didnt know the exact number. Being on a soccer team, Taylor was first able to sell her jewelry to keen teammates. They would buy one or two, as she was able make different styles, raising $120, Theresa added. In addition to selling her jewelry, Taylor was able to get help from her grandmother, who knitted scarves in different fall colours, and sold 29 of them to her teachers for $15 each, Theresa said. She knits in her spare time and she does about one and a half to two scarves a day and shes been filling the orders that way," said Theresa. "The teachers came to her support and that was great." As of Sept. 21, Taylor has raised $1,040 from the jewelry sales and other fundraisers to support cancer, Theresa said. On Saturday, she will be running as part of Team Gabriel, a 10-person relay team in the 100-plus kilometre run from Toronto to Blue Mountain. I believe they were originally rais- ing $10,000, but I think it has been upped to $15,000 now. Its been an overall effort of everybody involved. Not just Taylor, (as) Taylor is a small piece of the puzzle here in town, said Theresa. Theyve had fundraisers else- where, theyve sought support from different local communities, (and) my sister lives in Markham, so shes been working out in that area, its been a great help and the community has really rallied. Theresa said Taylor will be running a distance of 5 km towards the sec- ond-last leg of the run. She has been busy playing rep soccer and training for cross-country running at her school, which will prepare her for Saturday, she added. There are people who could use our help out there, and it (could) mean something as simple as work- ing at a soup kitchen giving some of your time, or doing something like (what) Taylor is doing right now. I have to say Im very proud. For more information or to donate to Team Gabriel, visit http://searscan- ada.akaraisin.com/greatcanadianrun/ TaylorTD. Helping Gabriel Continued from page 17
