A. Blakelock H.S. As a young person filledwith aspirations andpossibilities, I look for- ward to visiting the many places in the world there are to see. My entire family and I have a zest for world travel. The Soviet Union is gone, and the conflict between North America and Russia is gone. The idea that Russia is still a bleak, depressed and communist-rid- den country still exists. But, thanks to my aunt, who was born in a little town just outside of Moscow, my father and I got too see behind the once iron curtain and experience the land and the culture for ourselves. On Aug. 1, we flew from Munich, Germany to Moscow airport, unsure of what the next seven days would bring us. Finally through customs, we started the long drive from the Moscow airport to downtown Moscow. As soon as I could see the skyline of Moscow, I was captivated by the beauty before me. Every church had gold plat- ed chapels. But most noticeable was the sight of a brand new structure next to one that had existed for more than a thou- sand years. Everywhere you looked, there was beautiful art- work painted on walls of build- ings and subway stations and magnificent sculptures. I could not have imagined a more beautiful place. My first night in Russia, I ate dinner on the cobblestones of Red Square looking out at Saint Basils Church and the Kremlin Wall. I do not think I put the camera down for the whole night. The stars on top of the stee- ples of the buildings within the Kremlin Wall and the hammer and sickle symbol engraved on structures were the only rem- nants of communism my father Russian journey with my father an eye-opening experience and I could see. It was evident that it was a thing of the past. Throughout the week, we were given special access to many places and got to see many incredible things. We went to see the ballet Swan Lake and we toured inside the wall of the Kremlin. But most notably, was the walk on the ice sur- face where Paul Henderson scored the series-winning goal for Canada in the 1972 Canada vs. Russia series. Every night, we would all go to the restaurant at our hotel and talk about how fortunate we were to experience what each day brought us. We talked about the beauty of the country and the people, and how inviting Russia is. We promised each other that one-day we would come back to Moscow together and experience everything again. Russia was not what I thought it would be. Aside from the over 1,000 years of history and beauty, and the triumphs and tragedies that have plagued the land, Russia is a peaceful and inviting place, full of hope and opportunity. Once a sad and struggling country, Russia had the power to turn everything around. It created the power to bring families like mine closer together than ever before. I hope that the same future falls await the struggling countries of the world, such as Iraq. Maybe Iraq will one day be a country that has the power to bring me and my child together the way Russia brought my father and me closer.
