Oakville candidate Lesley Sprague, agree- ing with her fellow New Democrats, said her party supports the working-together plat- form with respect to teachers and ECEs and that the approach is essential to the programs success. Nik Spohr, the Halton NDP candidate, said that not only was it imperative to continue with the all-day kindergarten program, but more importantly it needs to be implemented fully and properly across the board. I have spoken with teachers who have worked in the kindergarten system and they have been saying that the transition has been very inconsistent across every board we want to make sure, within one school even, you do not have multiple classrooms that meet different specifications, he said. We want to have perfect, uniform fully-accessible kinder- garten resources for teachers, for students and make sure that full-day kindergarten is imple- mented properly and fully. The Liberals revisited full-day kindergarten when the candidates were asked what their party would do to eliminate child poverty. Full-day kindergarten addresses child pov- erty, Sakran said. Thats huge dollar savings for the average working family $6,500 per year, per child of day-care cost savings. It was our idea. Naidoo-Harris referred to the 19,000 chil- dren that were taken out of poverty during the latest recession due to Ontario Liberal govern- ment initiatives. This government has raised the minimum wage seven times. We have the Ontario Child Benefit, which is $1,100 we plan on raising that to $1,300 per child, she said. Were very committed to this (ending child poverty) and well continue to be committed to this and post-secondary tuition will go down by 30 per cent for middle-income families. Burlington NDP candidate Peggy Russell, however, questioned the Liberals track record. Poverty, since 2007 in Ontario, has increased by 17 per cent. Over the same time periods, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, respectively, reduced their poverty rates by 4 and 2 per cent. The Liberal government said they are committed to reducing child poverty. They reduced basic social assistance rates and starting out childcare centres, and they freezed (sic) the minimum wageHow does that begin to address child poverty? she asked. The NDP is committed to becoming a part- ner in affordable housing and getting people back to work in this province. Continued from page 21
