ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Until this year, Max Raike played a central role in what is considered the ultimate team game. As the quarterback of the White Oaks football team, he had many players depending on him. Now in his final year of high school, Raike decided it was time to do what he wanted. I love golf. Its my passion, the Grade 12 student said. I love everything about it. I love the challenge its just you against the course and no one else. Raike began play- ing five years ago but unlike many of the top finishers at Thursdays Halton golf champion- ship, he didnt play on any of the numerous junior tours this sum- mer. Instead, he worked at a land- scaping job in Oshawa. This was my opportunity to prove myself to people, he said after his round at Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington. Though he might not have had the competitive experience of his rivals, Raike certainly showed he doesnt lag behind in his skills on the course. Raike shot a two-over par 73 to finish tied for second, one stroke behind winner Joey fHeatherman o Burlingtons Corpus Christi. Despite his solid performance, Raike couldnt help but be a little disappointed. He bogeyed the 17th and then double-bo- geyed the 18th after hitting his drive out of bounds. I choked on the last two holes, he said. Eighteen is an easy hole, a par 5. But my goal today was to make it to (the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championships) and I did that. Also finishing in a tie for second with Raike and qualifying for the GHAC tournament was Abbey White Oaks student surprising second at Halton golf finals See Haynes, page 27 I love golf. It's my passion. I love everything about it. I love the challenge it's just you against the course and no one else. Max Raike, former White Oaks quarter- back who switched to golf this season
