These are financially tumul- tuous times for several coun- tries and it has led to a global tug of war on what to do. You are receiving almost instantaneous news coverage of each detail for each global finan- cial meeting and its outcome, followed by closing arguments from pundits with, of course, opposing opinions. World leaders can agree the global economy is on the brink of sliding back into a recession. However, they cannot agree on what action to take. The United Sates poured money on round one of the financial problems. That has increased the mammoth debt, but the economy is still extremely fragile. Now they have to decide what role their government should take. Do they try for a second hugely expensive quick fix similar to what Democratic President Obama is promot- ing? Or perhaps the more con- ppservative a roach the Republicans are pushing is the better choice. So far every- one is just arguing their economic phi- losophy and digging in their heels. As a result, Americans are fed up. There are Democrats on one side, Republicans on the other and very angry citi- zens in the middle. A recent poll by CNN showed the publics trust in their gov- ernment has hit an all-time low. Only 15 per cent of Americans trust their government. The U.S. is not alone with very heated and very public financial disagreements. Greece has added its colourful flavor to the world economic stage. Greece is effectively broke. Its government spends more than it takes in. This problem is compounded because some estimate that half of the Greek economy is underground. Underground means that business is transacted with cash and income goes undeclared. y pHow can the countr o erate when half of its potential tax revenue is never collected? Greece has had financial bailouts from other countries and those countries that pro- vide this aid want those eco- nomic problems corrected. So the government did what it had to do. It introduced aus- terity measures and attempted to reel in its spending. Many citizens reacted nega- tively and there were riots and protests in Athens. Two weeks ago the countrys finance minister was making an international plea to foreign countries to lend a hand. He is the countrys salesman scout- ing for likely donors. The President of Greece flew to Germany to court that gov- ernment for more funds. The backdrop to the Greek political leaders requesting more financial bailouts in an age of instant world-wide com- munication was more riots. There continues to be a clash between reality and enti- tlement around the world. Everyone wants someone else to fix their problem. That seems to be the state of the world lots of prob- lems, but few solutions. Never before have world leaders been under such microscopic public review. Messages are being deliv- ered with dramatic back- ground visuals. This almost real time media coverage can rock your emotions. Strip away the emotional aspect and reflect on your own financial goals. Focus on you and your family. Reassure yourself by reviewing your own financial situation and ensure you have a solid, well-crafted investment strategy during this financially tumultuous time. Do not become emotional- ly unhinged by the drama. You do not control these world events and you have no influ- ence over them. Focus on your financial situation. Focus on what you can influence.
