www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday February 24, 2007 - 23 Spotlight on repetitive strain Repetitive strain injuries (RSIs), more commonly known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) will take the spotlight Feb. 28 -- International RSI Awareness Day. There are over 40,000 workplace injuries reported in Ontario each year. Regardless of industry or profession, MSDs target all individuals in the workplace. They affect the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves in the human body, and develop as a result of repetitive, forceful, or awkward movements. Some injuries classified as a MDS include: back pain, muscle strain, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff syndrome, tennis elbow (epicondylitis), and shoulder pain (shoulder myalgia). MSDs aren't incurable, however; all they need is a little attention. The main goal of ergonomics is to reduce the risk of MSDs by matching the demands of the job to the abilities of the worker through the proper design of workstations, tools, environment, work schedules, policies, and procedures. Ergonomic improvements are often associated with improved productivity, quality, and morale, greatly increasing a workplace's return on investing in health and safety. Find out more about reducing the risk of MSDs in your workplace at www.iapa.ca. -- Submitted by IAPA (Industrial Accident Prevention Association), a not-for-profit organization operating in Ontario since 1917 that represents more than 50,000 member firms and in excess of 1.5 million Ontario workers. IAPA is Canada's leading workplace health and safety organization.
