"When you have a clean and sober house, you have people actively and passionately committed to making sure the house is clean and sober, but Home Suite Hope's main mandate is not addiction recovery," said Moro. "We had to look at the fact we had a shared living accommodation and this was really not going to be a positive model for us to follow in the long term." The organization also identified some capacity challenges in being a small agency -- as it was operating a shared living accommodation for males as well as an apartment building focused on servicing families, Moro said. "You had two program staff delivering two different lines of service and this was very challenging because the two different audiences were very different," he explained. "Helping someone with homelessness who is a single male is very different than helping someone from homelessness who is a single parent." HSH was able to secure a buyer for its townhouse property who was willing to take the house on and continue to service single males in the community, Moro said. The townhouse now offers ASH (Addiction Supportive Housing) through a new addiction recovery program in Halton and Peel. HSH plans to recommit itself to being a leader to mentor other organizations or agencies that want to develop their own transitional housing initiatives in their community -- called social entrepreneurism -- she said. HSH received $39,934 in donations last year, down from $55,096 in 2009. Treasurer Lisa Somers said government funding offset some of the decreases in 2010, but, at the end of the day, the revenues were down. Government funding to assist the homeless is decreasing and this is the first year the organization is not being supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Moro said. "You can't ride on the coat tails of Trillium forever and this year we've gone through the transition of no longer having Trillium funding, so we're working really strategically to provide a very creative and sustainable funding base." Proceeds from necklace and book sales went to HSH. HSH is now teaming up with Revera Retirement's Churchill Place location to sell Souper Bowl V cookbooks and custommade necklaces. Holiday brochures will also be placed in the lobby at all three Revera Oakville locations. An Empty Bowls fundraiser cookbook can be purchased for $20, while a necklace costs $50, with $40 going to the Hope 4 Holidays campaign. "Revera has been a long time supporter of HSH and this year was one of our soup sponsors at Empty Bowls, too," said Graham-Hood. Necklaces come in a variety of colours and stand for HSH. She said a necklace consists of a strand of glass seed beads, featuring a house charm, a snow quartz charm and a silver-plated hope charm. "Snow quartz is a semi-precious stone that provides support while one is learning lessons and helps one to let go of overwhelming responsibilities and limitations," said Graham-Hood. The location is also a drop-off spot for people wishing to donate funds, baskets or Christmas gifts for the campaign. Revera is located at 345 Church St. Call 905-338-3311 for more information. Along with monetary donations, GrahamHood said HSH is also accepting gifts that can be anything related to medical, dental, transportation, or music, among others. Items can be dropped off at HSH or arrangements can be made for a pick up. Tax receipts will be issued if purchased items are new. "(With) Hope 4 Holidays, we want to try to get more and more people in the community participating," said Graham-Hood. People can also purchase cookbooks and donate online at www.homesuitehope.org.
