17 · Wednesday, January 18, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Many of our children will be taking their place as future leaders in a few short years; therefore, it is critical that the concept of greatness be introduced into their everyday language and experiences. Greatness, excellence, integrity, and personal best are concepts that our children should be familiar with and strive for on a continuous basis. To encourage greatness, suggest to your child that they read books about heroes, athletes, and those who have excelled and made a difference in the world. As a family, experience award-winning literature, highly acclaimed movies, sporting events, symphonies, and art galleries which will expose you and your children to the work of masters, those individuals who have set their sights on achieving at a level of excellence. Get out into nature, visit our forests, and experience the many natural wonders of our land that are so powerful and which feed the soul. As an educator, I would like to encour- I am good - What about greatness? age children and their parents to begin using superlatives to expand oral language and to extend a child's range of expressive language. For example, when asked, "How was your day?", a response could be, `amazing', `stimulating', `surprising', `fabulous', `exciting', etc. All of these responses are much more powerful and will often spark further conversation and interaction than the typical response, "Good". Our words have power, and the words we choose reflect the kind of person we are, or aspire to become. Why not give this a try? The next time a shop clerk asks, "How are you today?", answer, "I am amazing!" or "I am happy." or "I feel terrific today!" Even if you are not quite at that `great' feeling level, you will be surprised to find that you actually begin to feel more like the `amazing' response you expressed to the clerk. Set yourself and your children up for `greatness'. Why not? Why do our kids need a post-secondary education? (NC) - In an increasingly competitive society, where more and more jobs require some sort of diploma or degree, it's never been more important for parents to start talking about post-secondary education with their children. After all, experts say Canada must take full advantage of a better educated population and a highly qualified workforce if we are to succeed economically and compete in a global economy. Also, a highly skilled workforce fosters innovation, social development and opportunities for individuals to advance in the labour market. If you have children at home and your dream is to send them to college, university or trade school after they graduate from high school, there are many ways you can start the ball rolling. Through the Canada Learning Bond (CLB) and the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG), the federal government gives money to parents to start saving now even if college or university is years away. To find out more about the CLB and CESG, visit CanLearn.ca, call toll-free 1-800-O-Canada (1-800-6226232) or visit your nearest Service Canada Centre. Linda Sweet M.S. Ed.
