www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, March 15, 2012 · 14 White Oaks students continue debate tradition Teams qualify for provincials, nationals White Oaks Secondary School is continuing its tradition of strong performance at debate tournaments, with two of its teams qualifying for the provincials and one for the junior nationals. The provincial competition will take place in Ottawa later this month (March 31) while the national junior championship will happen in Montreal this April. Strong showing The junior squad -- featuring Emil Stanca and Zaid Salaheen -- was one of four teams to qualify to the nationals with a strong showing at the junior provincial final hosted at White Oaks on Feb. 25-26. The tournament was organized by a team of about 50 students, who served as judges, speakers, timers and officials. The two teams that qualified for the provincials did so at a recent Halton regional debate final. In addiiton, two teams (two students in each) from the school's debate club will be competing at the provincials in Ottawa this month. as far away as Manitoba, Montreal and Halifax. The three teams consisted of Sarraj and Choi, Smith and Osama Ahmed, and Osman Yusuf and Tarang Marathe. The team of Sarraj and Choi reached the finals (top four). Additionally, another White Oaks debater, Jack Reeves, who partnered with Toronto's Northern Secondary student Daniel Milton, reached the finals in the competition. Individually, Reeves placed in 10th place and finished sixth.
