Special thanks to: EXCLUSIVE BLACK TIE SPONSOR Greg Kuchma, Royal LePage Burloark Real Estate Services REISSNER, Gertrude (Gertraud) Ilse Passed away peacefully on Monday, March 5, 2012 at the Cooksville Care Centre in her 89th year. Born to the late Erich Fehse and Mina Fehse on November 28, 1923 in Berlin, Germany, she grew up there and attended business school, working as a secretary at the time of her marriage to the late Werner Reissner in 1948. She and her husband immigrated from Germany in 1951 and following a rough Atlantic crossing on the M/S Nelly arrived in Halifax and proceeded to the camp for Displaced Persons in Ajax, Ontario. The couple soon went to Oakville, where Gertrude found employment first as domestic help and then as a teller at the Royal Bank of Canada on Lakeshore Road. Upon the birth of their son Gertrude became a homemaker. The couple moved to Bronte in 1957 (before the village became incorporated into Oakville) where they resided together until Werner died in 1986. After her husband's death, Gertrude rejoined the workforce and was a popular employee of Beaver Foods at Sheridan College until retiring. She continued to live on Riverview Street until October 2010, when failing health required her move to the Care Centre. Her interests included yoga and she was a long-time member of the Taoist Tai Chi Association, as well as the German Canadian Club Eintracht. An enthusiastic reader of biographies and a patient calligrapher, she loved cats and gardening and always looked forward to concerts by the Oakville Symphony. She enjoyed travel and visiting childhood friends in Germany. She is survived by her son Leslie of Düsseldorf, Germany and his wife Linda Anderson and will be missed by brothers-in-law and sisters as well as by many friends in Ontario and Berlin. A special thank you to the staff of the Cooksville Care Centre for their many kindnesses. Cremation has taken place and interment will be at the Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada would be appreciated.
