At the age of five, when the training wheels came off, Koen set his sights on and completed another challenge: raising close to $4,000 for Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children -- and now he's eyeing the $6,000 mark by April 12. Described as a five year old with a heart of gold by his mom, Dawn McLeod, Koen took on the rather steep goal of raising thousands of dollars for SickKids hospital after finding out about the fundraiser from a motor sports newsletter his father, Brad, subscribes to. Brad's love of snowmobiles, ATVs, and dirt bikes inevitably led to Koen's interest in dirt biking, said Dawn. "It was really a fluke, though," she said of how Koen came across his first dirt bike in 2006. "My husband and I were driving around and saw a dirt bike with training wheels at a garage sale. We went and checked it out, and said we have to get this for Koen. We haven't been able to get him off of his dirt bike since." MX for Children is the charity involved in organizing the fundraising initiative -- it connects motocross lovers with children's hospiSee Then page 8 Ontario SIU clears police in shooting of Kyle Newman By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has concluded two Halton police officers acted in selfdefence when they opened fire on Kyle Newman, 43, on Jan. 12 in front of the Oakville police station on Dundas Street. The report, issued by SIU Director Ian Scott Wednesday, also said Newman was armed with a large knife and was advancing on the officers Kyle Newman when he was shot and killed at the 20 Division Police Station, located at 95 Oak Walk Dr., near Dundas Street and Trafalgar Road. The SIU assigned six investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of the shooting. Eleven witness officers and one of the subject officers were also interviewed and closedcircuit television imagery and radio transmissions were analyzed. The investigation found that shortly after 11:30 a.m., a Halton officer was driving out of the police station parking lot when Newman, who was in a silver Nissan, intentionally struck the officer's cruiser. The officer attempted to drive away, but was rammed again, at which point the officer used his radio to call for backup.
