Walk Saturday to boost mental health awareness By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A walk to be held in Mississauga's Erindale Park on Saturday, April 28 will be in memory of former Oakville resident John Hanan to raise public awareness about mental illness. Hanan, 28, who worked at Toronto's Tandem newspaper, committed suicide April 19, 2007 following a struggle with bipolar disorder. Hanan's mother, Mary Margaret Hanan, said the pain of losing him has only increased. Mary Margaret said she is holding this `Walk of Hope' to help stop other families from going through what she continues to endure. She said her son was desperately frightened of what people would think of him if they knew he had bipolar disorder. This fear only mounted as his illness progressed to the point where he was probably going to require hospitalization, she noted. "I want to get the message out that mental illness is an illness just like any other. You don't need to be ashamed if you feel that way. You have no control over it," said Mary Margaret. 17 · Thursday, April 26, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Registration for the event begins at 9 a.m., with the walk itself beginning at 10 a.m. Participants have the option of walking either 2.5 kilometres or 5 km.
