Shred-It mobile trucks at Oakville Place this Saturday Crime Stoppers and Shred-it want to help Halton Region take action against identity theft and fraud. The document destruction company will have its mobile shredding trucks on site at numerous malls in Halton, including Oakville Place, and invite residents to bring all the documents they can carry for shredding. "The best safeguard against personal identity theft is to regularly destroy confidential personal and business documents," Bruce Andrew, vice-president of marketing at Shred-it, said in a press release. "Organizing community Shredit events raises awareness about the dangers of identity theft and fraud, and encourages consumers and businesses to take the necessary steps to protect themselves from these crimes." Representatives from Crime Stoppers, Halton Regional Police Service's Fraud Bureau and Shred-it will offer tips and advice on how to protect against identity theft as well as collect donations that will benefit the local Crime Stoppers programs in each community. To prevent personal identity theft, Shred-it advises shredding sensitive documents and old files, including: receipts; cheques; pre-approved credit applications and credit card statements that are no longer needed; outdated tax returns that are no longer needed; letterhead; envelopes and return address labels; and business cards. To protect against identity theft, it is recommended you: · always shred confidential or sensitive documents that have any personal information about you or your family · take receipts when leaving stores, restaurants and bank machines · use a cross-cut shredder instead of a strip shredder to make it harder to repiece the strips together · keep your recycling and garbage safely inside your garage until garbage day, so thieves have fewer chances to find the information they need · always keep your social security number in a safe place. It's recommended that you not carry your social security card in your wallet · report lost or stolen bank and credit cards immediately 21 · Thursday, May 10, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com · never provide personal information over the phone, unless you made the call and are certain about who you are speaking to · have the hard drive of an old computer you are getting rid of, professionally destroyed.
