"In 2011, the challenge raised $155,000. This year through the tremendous support of all six banks, they raised an amazing $176, 411," said OHF project manager Kate Van de Laar. The seventh annual event saw the racing of hospital beds by local bankers through downtown Oakville along Lakeshore Road. Each year, six local banks -- BMO Bank of Montreal, CIBC, Wheels came off but teams stayed the course HSBC Bank of Canada, Royal Bank, Scotiabank, and TD Canada Trust -- have the month of April to compete in raising the most funds to purchase new beds for the hospital. "We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming community support we receive from our local banks and their customers every year," OHF CEO Tina Triano stated in a press release. "Not only has this initiative become a major fundraiser for our hospital, it has also become one of Oakville's most exciting community events." Some 250 people took part in this year's challenge as the banks battled for the finish line -- despite technical difficulties with the wheels on the decommissioned hospital beds that turned the event into a foot race. This year's race winner was Scotiabank, which also took the award for top fundraising bank, raising $51,004 in donations. HSBC snagged the title of top per branch fundraiser, while BMO won the sportsmanship award. The best driven bed award went to RBC, while CIBC grabbed best cheer and TD Bank won best decorated bed.
