www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 23, 2012 · 28 Burloak athletes combine to win five medals at World Cup Continued from page 26 Whether or not women's canoeing is added, she says the sport has given her more opportunities to compete around the world than she ever thought she would have. "There is no question that for every amateur athlete the Olympic Games has a special place in their heart and will always be considered the pinnacle of competition," she said. "In truth, I didn't start paddling because I thought I could make the Olympics and I didn't keep paddling because I thought I could make the Olympics. I do it because I really love it, and that is enough." If women's canoeing does join the Olympic roster after her competition days are over, Nicholson said she'll be proud of her contribution in helping the sport reach that level. Nicholson's golds were two of five medals earned by Burloak paddlers at the seasonopening World Cup. Mark Oldershaw secured his Olympic spot in style by claiming the gold medal in the men's C-1 1,000m. It was his fifth individual World Cup gold and his third in the 1,000m. "This feels incredible," said Oldershaw, an Olympic team member in 2008. "The last few months has been such a build up and to get it done on the day feels so good." Adam van Koeverden, who already nailed down his Olympic spot at the national team trials, took a bronze medal in the K-1 1,000m. The three-time Olympic medalist was just a third of a second off the pace set by Denmark's Rene Poulsen. "It was good overall but sometimes early in the season I forget the pace a little bit," said van Koeverden. `'I knew Rene was going to be fast in the end so I just tried to stay relaxed and save some energy. I know my last 300 metres will be much, much better come August." Brady Reardon earned a silver medal in the K-1 500m, an event that was removed from the Olympic roster in favour of the K-1 200m. "It's an absolutely amazing result," Reardon said. "This is my first year racing K-1 internationally so this is a pretty good start for me." -- Herb Garbutt can be followed on Twitter @herbgarbutt Call Jessica at 905-845-3824 ext. 284 jlangero@oakvillebeaver.com LANDSCAPING PAINTING MAINTENANCE and CONSTRUCTION · Weekly Lawn & Garden Care · Property Grading & Drainage · Sod, Garden, Mulch, Soil & Plant Installation · Patios and Walkways A.M.
