www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 30, 2012 · 26 Hinchcliffe sixth at Indy 500 Five gold for Blakelock student Whatever happens the rest of his career, Hinchcliffe can always say he once led the Indy 500. Starting in the middle of the front row Sunday, Hinchcliffe overtook Ryan Briscoe down the front straight just before the end of the first lap. Hinchcliffe would end up leading five laps early in the race on his way to a sixth-place finish. It was the Oakville driver's fifth straight top-six finish this season. Picking up 41 points, Hinchcliffe moved into a tie for second place with Helio Castroneves in the overall driver standings. He also gained points on series leader Will Power, who was involved in a crash in the first half of the race. Hinchcliffe was hoping for a higher finish but was satisfied with the result. "Had more than that on the cards but fought a few battles!" he tweeted following the race. "Still really pleased with the result. Like I've said before, if 6th is a bad day for us, we're doing something right." The IndyCar season continues June 3 at the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. Brandon Tyrrell should have five strong chances of advancing to the provincial high school track and field championships when the regional qualifiers begin tomorrow (Thursday) in St. Catharines. The T.A. Blakelock student won three individual events at the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) championships this week in Hamilton, also earning gold in a pair of relay events. Tyrrell won the junior boys' 100metre, 200m and high jump events, and helped the Tigers to wins in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Tyrrell was one of several Oakville athletes to earn gold in more than one individual event at the GHAC meet. Iroquois Ridge's Bryanna Samuels won the midget girls' 100m and 200m races, with teammate Riley Dane claiming top honours in the junior girls' long jump and triple jump. Abbey Park student Evelyne Guay collected gold in the junior girls' 400m and 800m races, while Loyola's Bridget O'Neill did the same in the junior girls' 1,500m and 3,000m events. St. Thomas Aquinas runner Kelly Hennessy was fastest in the senior girls' 1,500m and 3,000m, and White Oaks' Owen Wheeler was victorious in the midget boys' long jump and triple jump competitions. Other local individual champions included Abbey Park's Devyn Mackenzie (junior girls' high jump), King's Christian's Amber Schenk (senior girls' triple jump), Blakelock's Aidan Challis (midget boys' 300m hurdles) and Khaleel Griffiths (junior boys' 400m), Holy Trinity's Brandon Cyrus (midget boys' high jump), Iroquois Ridge's John Breeson (senior boys' 400m), Maclachlan College's Lewis Kent (open boys' 2,000m steeplechase) and White Oaks' Fatim Ammor (senior girls' shot put). In relay action, Holy Trinity won the junior girls' 4x100m in addition to Blakelock's wins in the junior boys' 4x100m and open boys' 4x400m races. The top five athletes in each event at the GHAC meet earned a trip to south regionals, which will conclude Friday. The top five performers at regionals will qualify for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships, slated for June 7-9 in Brockville.
