CUV stolen from senior returned home by daughter Continued from page 1 5 · Friday, June 1, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com It's believed that Paul had her hands so full upon arriving at the pharmacy that she inadvertently left her keys behind. A few hours later, Crawford was driving on Neyagawa Boulevard when she spotted her mother's missing vehicle being driven with two men inside. In addition to calling 9-1-1, Crawford also managed to call her mother while following the stolen vehicle. "She phones me and screams, `Mom, I found your car. I'm following your car.' I didn't even recognize her voice because she was so full of adrenalin," said Paul. Crawford said she was excited; not only to call her mom and tell her she found the stolen car, but to also feel like a police officer again. "I've only been retired 11 months. The skills that you learn in policing, the tools that you have for your job, your observation, your instinct, they never leave you," Crawford said. "Instinctively, I start calling it in like I would be if I was a police officer. I'm calling my directions like I would be on a police radio, but now I'm on my cell phone with my earbuds in." Crawford followed the vehicle to the north end of town. "They tried to elude me in the Walmart graham paine / oakville beaver / @halton_photog together again: Joe and Irene Paul have their Santa Fe CUV back again. It was stolen and then spotted by their daughter, a retired police officer, who was instrumental in its recovery. parking lot, so I continued past their parking spot, a couple lanes over so it didn't look like I was following them. I think, by then, they were probably onto me," she said. As she drove past the spot, the Santa Fe was driven out of its spot, with its driver heading over behind the LCBO. The pair then drove it to a little plaza and parked the car. "They got out and appeared to be walking away nonchalantly, but I saw the one guy throw the keys underneath another car so he wouldn't have any evidence. At that point, all the cruisers came in," she said. The car was searched for evidence. With no damage done to it, Crawford was able to drive it to her parents' home. Irene and her husband, Joe, were overjoyed to get the car back. "She was crying all day long that she lost her car," Joe said. "She attracts all the bad things and she just makes them OK," Irene said.
