A local church is inviting the community out to Zumba for a cause Sunday. Registration for the class begins at 2 p.m. followed by the dance class from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the gym of St. Paul's United Church, 454 Rebecca St. Registration costs $20 -- donations more than $20 will receive a tax receipt from the Rotary Zumba to build a school Mayor's Historical Picnic Sunday Club of Oakville. Proceeds will help build a new school for students in the Dominican Republic. A group of young people from New Brunswick Alberta and Toronto will join Oakville Rotarian Judy Warrington in July to build a new school for this community under her organization, Go.See. Do. PowerTrips. (behind Terra Greenhouses, Hwy. #5) 33 · Friday, June 8, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com The students have been fundraising for the bricks and mortar to do a construction project, and have enough to make a three-classroom new school, but funds are needed for a roof. Located on the main highway connecting Puerto Plata and Santiago, the multi-grade school, with 135 students from Kindergarten-Grade 8, currently operates out of two old city buses (one acting as a library and the other as a classroom) and a small wooden structure built by the community. The Oakville Historical Society will host the annual Mayor's Historical Picnic and Band Concert on Sunday (June 10) at Lakeside Park. Residents can take in an old-fashioned day with the Wind Orchestra and Jazz Band, playing favourites. Special guest will be former Oakville Mayor Harry Barrett. Attendees should bring a picnic lunch -- tables are provided -- and tune into the fun between noon-4:30 p.m. To entertain children, clowns Doodlebug will be face painting and Round-a-bout will be making weird and wonderful balloon hats. Scottish country dancers will show off their mastery of reels and strathspeys. Local fire and police departments will also be on hand with engines and cruisers. An antique Ford will also be on site, accompanied in real "olde fashioned style" with driver and passenger in period costume.
