By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Youth helps out friends A 12-year-old Oakville boy succeeded in swimming 100 laps of a 25-metre pool -- a distance of 2.5 kilometres -- in one hour to raise money for the Newman Boys Trust Fund. Noah Bloch, a swimmer with the Oakville Aquatic Club who completed the swim last Wednesday (June 20), is good friends with the Newman brothers Thomas, Joshua and James, and felt the need to help where he could in the wake of recent tragic events. On Jan. 12, the boys' mother, Katherine Newman, 43, was found murdered in her Treetop Terrace home. At about the same time, her estranged husband Kyle Newman, 43, was fatally shot by Halton police after he charged officers with a knife in his hand at the police station at 95 Oak Walk Dr. Halton police have yet to officially link the two incidents. "I really wanted to help out my friends," said Noah. "I wanted to make sure they have the money they need to go to good universities and stuff." Noah's father, Dan Bloch, said about two months after Katherine and Kyle died, Noah came up with the idea of holding a swim-a-thon to raise money to help his friends. "They've done one before. They do one annually to raise money for the swim club," said Dan. "We thought that was a great idea and we MacBook INVENTORY SALE! Noah said the event, which took place at the Mississauga Lifetime Fitness facility on Pepper Mill Court, went well and estimates his swim-athon raised more than $12,000. "I was really tired afterwards, but really happy at what I'd accomplished," he said. "My goal was to swim 100 lengths in one hour. I swam 107 lengths, so I was pretty happy about that. I just kept thinking how many people had sponsored me per length, so every length I swam meant more money for my friends' trust fund."
