Project Safe Start already underway With children returning to school, Halton police are reminding drivers to slow down or face the consequences. Until Sept. 14, officers will be engaged in Project `Safe Start,' which will see a highly-visible police presence around area schools in an effort to get local drivers to slow down, watch for pedestrians and pay attention to school crossing guards escorting children across busy intersections. While `Safe Start' does try to change driver behaviour through raising awareness and education, there is an enforcement component with police targeting those who are speeding, aggressive drivers, those not wearing seatbelts and people using hand-held communication devices while driving. "Efforts such as Project `Safe Start' serve to enhance overall safety within our communities," said Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner. "Our police service will continue similar initiatives throughout the entire year, recognizing the safety of children is paramount." The Halton Regional Police Service's annual Traffic Safety and Awareness Day will take place on Monday (Sept. 10). On the day, Halton police senior command officers will join district response units, uniform patrol officers and education services officers in promoting traffic safety around Halton's schools. Tanner is scheduled to attend St. Joan of Arc Catholic Elementary School at 2912 Westoak Trails Blvd. 7· Friday, September 7, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Senior loses emergency cash An Oakville senior is imploring the community to help her if they come across a bank envelope she lost with money she had taken out for a family emergency.
