www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 7, 2012 · 8 Necklace scam not the first in the area Continued from page 1 When the group drove off, Purandhar said he went inside the house to show his wife the jewelry, but when he reached up, he realized his own chain was gone. Purandhar said he wears his chain with the clasp in front so he believes the woman used a device to cut it loose, otherwise, he would have noticed her unhook it. The Oakville resident described the van as a newer model that was silver in colour. Halton Regional Police confirm that Purandhar reported the theft. Police said similar thefts were reported in Hamilton last month, but are unsure whether the incidents are connected. Late last week, the Beaver reported Halton police were warning residents not to fall for a distraction scam where thieves targeted necklaces. On the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 26, police said a woman was walking in the area of Parklane Road when a vehicle pulled up next to her. The male driver asked the woman where a church was and started crying. He said he and his companion were giving away souvenirs in memory of his late mother. Police said a female passenger in the backseat then put a ring on the woman's finger and a necklace around her neck. A short time after the driver drove away, the woman realized her own necklace was missing. The jewelry the woman was given turned out to be worthless. Police said a similar incident took place earlier that morning in Acton. A woman, gardening in her front yard, was called over to a vehicle by a driver who had pulled up to her driveway. Again, after an exchange, her necklace was swiped and fake jewelry handed out. In that instance, the driver of the vehicle was described as male, 40-50 years of age, with short black hair and a moustache. He was accompanied by a man, 40-45 years of age, also with short black hair and a moustache who was sitting in the front passenger seat. A woman, 40-60 years of age, sat in the back seat. The vehicle is described as a four-door, possibly Dodge Avenger-style vehicle.
