Vol. 50 No. 107 "Using Communication To Build Better Communities" Victim warns residents of jewelry scam By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Setler Purandhar is kicking himself for not having read The Oakville Beaver last Friday (Aug. 31) -- if he had, he said he would likely still have the 22-karat gold chain he received as a wedding gift from his brother and sister-in-law 33 years ago. Instead, he became this community's second reported victim of a jewelry distraction scam. Now, Purandhar is warning "Be on the lookout, don't other residents to be vigilant. be distracted and keep a "Be on the lookout, don't be distance. If you're giving distracted and keep a distance," directions, don't get too he said. "If you're giving direcclose." tions, don't get too close." Purandhar said he was mowing his lawn at around 7 p.m. Setler Purandhar, on Monday (Sept. 3) when a Oakville resident van pulled up to the curb beside his house. He said he was beckoned to come closer by its occupants, so he approached, believing the people in the vehicle were asking for directions. When he got closer to the van, he counted two men in the front, a woman in the back and a fourth person with her. He isn't sure if it was a man or woman. According to Purandhar, the man in the front passenger seat struck up a conversation with him. "He had a ring in his hand and a necklace," Purandhar said. "He said his father had been a jeweler in India who had died eight years ago. In honour of his father's memory, he was giving away jewelry -- which sounded strange to me -- and he put a ring and necklace in my hand." Purandhar said the woman in the back seat then produced a necklace, put it around his neck and shook his hand.
