Culture Days a chance to check out new QEPCCC By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF It's not the first time Culture Days events will be taking place in Oakville, but it is the first time Town of Oakville is officially getting involved. Mayor Rob Burton proclaimed Sept. 28-30 as Culture Days in Oakville when he visited a summer camp program at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC) in August. That's because the centre will play host to the Town and Oakville Arts Council-sponsored events. "This is a great opportunity for people of all ages to come and see many of the different art forms that the Town of Oakville has to offer and for people to experience music, see professional artists and to be able to get their hands dirty and try something they may not have tried before," said Sarah Douglas-Murray, senior manager of Oakville's culture services. Culture Days is a national initiative launched in 2010. It is a collaborative, volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. Here in Oakville, Culture Days programming will run on only Saturday (Sept. 29), not the other two days of the national event. It is happening on the same weekend Oakville is participating in the annual Doors Open propeople will be able to check out and buy art or to meet with the artists and performers. Lisa Giordano-Hoehn, membership co-ordinator and events planner with the arts council, has booked 10 artists to perform at the black box theatre. Among them are vocalists Margot Roi and Isabella Lecomte; pianist Dimitar Pentchev; a fiddlesticks group out of the Academy of Music and a south-Asian dance group. There will also be an improv theatre workshop and more. Giordano-Hoehn said each of the 10 performers will have the stage for about 20 min- 29 · Friday, September 14, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com utes, but they will be available at the centre from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. to meet with people or to sell copies of their CDs or tickets to upcoming shows. The Town will also open up its art studios, giving people use of them. People will get a chance to draw, paint and work with clay. If the program is successful this year, it may be expanded to more days in future years, said Douglas-Murray. "Really, it's a chance for people to come and see professional artists and to see what we have available at Queen Elizabeth Park," she said. Mayor Rob Burton gramming, during which people have a chance to see sites in town that may normally be closed to the public. "Queen Elizabeth Park was always going to participate in the Doors Open activities and when we realized that Culture Days was going to happen the same weekend, we thought let's widen this celebration," Douglas-Murray said. The Oakville Arts Council, the Town's Culture Days partner, has participated in the national event the past two years. It has reached out to local performers and artists, who will do performance showcases, including music, dance and theatre, at the black box theatre inside QEPCCC.
