Youths asked to speak up for affordable housing A new contest is encouraging youths to be the voice for affordable housing in Halton. Teens are being encouraged to be creative and raise awareness about the importance of the issues of affordable housing and homelessness. The Region is asking Halton youth aged 14-18 to submit YouTube videos, stories/poems, comic books, posters, paintings, architectural models, photo essays, multimedia presentations, songs and anything they can dream up to its annual Be a Hero, Be a Voice for Affordable Housing Contest. The YouTube component is new to the contest this year. Videos will be posted on Halton Region's YouTube channel during the contest period and the secondary school with the highest number of submissions will receive the Be A Hero Spirit Award. "Affordable housing is an important issue and it is a vital component of Halton Region's Comprehensive Housing Strategy," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "The Be a Hero contest helps raise awareness in the community about affordable housing and homelessness and gives youth an opportunity to express their thoughts on these issues in a way that is meaningful to them." Cash prizes will be given to the top five submissions. The top prize is $1,000. Rules, regulations and how to submit an entry can be found online at www.halton.ca/beahero. Entries are being accepted until Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. Winners will be announced at the Be a Hero awards ceremony on Nov. 21, held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Burlington Convention Centre.
