A hard-hitting and aggressive Loyola defence managed to hold the Titans offence scoreless until late in the third quarter, when Trinity scored on a 48-yard screen pass to make the score 9-0. The Titans salted the game away with another touchdown pass by quarterback Michael Brooks, this one a nine-yarder to Baptiste Bodin with 38 seconds left in the fourth quarter. "They have a hard-nosed team and a great defence," Brooks said of the Hawks. "We knew it would be a battle coming in and they didn't disappoint. "Their defence is definitely good. There's some good athletes on that team." Hearing compliments like that, or being reminded that Loyola is once again relevant as a Division 1 senior football program, is music to O'Hara's ears. "I've been here five years. Five years ago, we were losing 63-0 to these guys," O'Hara said. "There's been a buzz around the school for the last couple years. We still don't have the big guys... but they're tough and understand the game and work well with what we have." The Hawks are also not afraid to challenge themselves. The Halton league's tiering system, which takes into account each school's performance over the previous three years, suggested Loyola should compete in Division 2 this fall. The players weren't buying it. "Our kids were furious," O'Hara said. "They knew if they went to Division 1, it probably would not be a championship year, but they just want to play with the big boys." Loyola certainly did that Tuesday, though the Titans' defence still prevailed when things mattered most. Early in the second quarter, with Trinity holding a 2-0 lead that came from a bad Loyola snap that resulted in a safety, the Hawks recovered a Titans fumble at the Trinity 21-yard line. But the Titans forced Loyola into a two-and-out, and the Hawks' field-goal attempt into a stiff wind fell short. Then, in the third quarter, Loyola marched down the field on a seven-minute drive that penetrated as deep as the Trinity nine-yard line. The Titans again forced a field-goal attempt, then blocked the kick to maintain their 2-0 advantage. The following drive, Trinity scored its first touchdown to finally open up some breathing room. "We're extremely happy with where we're going," Brooks said. "If we win next week, we'll probably have a bye going into the playoffs. We can rest up and get ready for what's next." MICHAEL IVANIN / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER MARKED MAN: William Ellis of the Holy Trinity Titans (with ball) tries to avoid a tackle from Loyola's Dan Chun (second from right) yesterday at Loyola. What's next will almost certainly be the undefeated Corpus Christi Longhorns, who already pounded Trinity 47-13 earlier this season. But Brooks is confident that if the Titans earn a rematch, things could be much different. "We're going to be coming in confident," he said. "We won't be the same team they saw a couple weeks ago."
