New Oakville Cycles hits the ground cycling The grassroots cycling group Oakville Cycles officially launched Thursday at the Halton Active Communities Summit. Oakville Cycles was a panel participant at the Halton summit, which the group felt was the place to officially launch their organization, stated a press release. The group promotes cycling, bicycle-friendly business districts, cycling infrastructure and organizing social rides. Last April, Ward 2 Town Councillor Pam Damoff invited April Economides, a consultant who creates bicycle-friendly business district plans for cities across North America, to Oakville to share her business case for bikes. Since then, Damoff, Tom Ormerod and Blake Poland have taken the lead as co-organizers of the local initiative. "It has been incredibly rewarding to work with Tom and Blake and other like-minded residents and businesses to see our group come to where it is today," Damoff said in the release. "We invite residents and businesses to come along for the ride -- the bike ride -- with us." Oakville Cycles has hosted secure valet bike parking at its bike corrals at several BIA events, including downtown Oakville's Midnight Madness and Jazzfest, Movies in the Park, and will do the same at the upcoming Kerr Village BIA Pumpkinpalooza this weekend. It has also organized social rides to help residents "rediscover their bikes" -- the most recent seeing residents ride from downdonated by the Kerr Village BIA, which will be given to the first 50 children to arrive. Residents are also invited to join Oakville Cycles on Nov. 15 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts' showing of Spin, a theatrical performance telling stories about women, cycling and liberation through a series of songs played live 17 · Wednesday, October 24, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com on a vintage bicycle. "Active transportation is all about people having options to leave the car at home and cycle as a way to get around, meaning we're healthier, more connected, less dependent on increasingly expensive fossil fuels, and having less impact on the environment," stated Poland, a founder of Go Local Oakville. Oakville Cycles is planning a Halloween Kidical Mass Family Bike Ride on Saturday (Oct. 27), starting from the Lions Pool parking lot at 159 Felan Ave. and ending at the Kerr Village BIA Pumpkin-palooza at Heritage Square.
