High school sanctions delayed By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) has postponed the labour sanctions it had called to start Wednesday, in a bid to speed talks with the provincial government and find a resolution to their disagreement. Teachers and school support staff unions have been vocal against the provincial government's Putting Students First Act, which took away their rights to bargain new contracts locally, froze their wages for two years and cut into benefits. OSSTF stated Monday, its members would begin job sanctions yesterday (Wednesday). However, it then announced it will delay the sanctions until Sunday (Nov. 11) at 11:59 p.m. OSSTF president Ken Coran has been communicating with government representatives to seek resolutions. "A commitment has been made to meet on Nov. 7 to proceed in an expeditious and efficient manner and fast track to potential resolutions. With that commitment, OSSTF/FEESO will delay the commencement of sanctions until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11," stated an OSSTF news release. As of press deadlines, there was a media black-out in effect. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn welcomed the news, thanking teachers for continued extracurricular activities involvement. "All parties to this agreement, including our government, need to take a step back and take advantage of this opportunity," said Flynn, in a news release. The OSSTF represents 60,000 members across Ontario. In the Halton District School Board, the OSSTF represents more than 1,300 public high school teachers, 500 secondary occasional teachers, 305 members of the Office Clerical and Secretarial Staff (OCTU), and approximately 100 members in the Professional Student Services Personnel (PSSP), representing social workers, psychologists, speech language pathologists, and child and youth counsellors. In Halton, OCTU represents secretarial staff in both elementary and secondary schools. For teachers, sanctions may include withdrawing student supervision outside the classroom, not attending staff or department meetings, not meeting or communicating with parents outside the school day, and not covering classes for absent teachers. Occasional teachers were being directed to decline additional on-call, supervision or additional assignments. Parents and students could notice the effect of sanctions outside the school day, through reduced contact with teachers via e-mail or websites (homework assignments, marks). While high school extra-curricular activities would continue, sanctions would require the board to restrict activities that draw teachers out of class, like team practices. "We are cautiously optimistic these talks between the Province and the unions will be productive, and avert the potential for labour action," said David Euale, Halton District School Board education director, in a news release.
