Santa Claus Parade brings joy and fosters a spirit of giving hen Santa comes to town Saturday, Nov. 17, people of all ages will line the streets of downtown and Kerr Village. This year's theme is Once Upon a Christmas, and for years the parade has been part of a special story of giving back to our community. Sometimes we get caught up with the excitement of Christmas and forget many who live in our community go without over the holidays. Oakville's Santa Claus Parade has a long history of giving with its toy and food drives and the sale of red noses for charity to make our community a better place for those less fortunate. On parade day, the Kinsmen Club of Oakville will collect non-perishable food for the Salvation Army. They encourage everyone to bring at least one non-perishable food item or cash. The Kinsmen Club is partnering with Whole Foods Market Oakville and Oakville Hydro, both providing in-kind support for the food drive. This year you can Stuff A Bus for the food drive -- a decorated Oakville Transit bus will debut at the parade, and then will be found throughout town until Jan. 1, 2013. Special thanks to Peter Day, president of Endo Networks, and his staff who have been working with the parade for the last year to bring this bus to the community. Thanks as well to Sheridan College, Joe Morse and especially Megan Stiver whose design was chosen for the bus, and Oakville Transit. Encore Cinemas will present three exclusive screenings of the Christmas classics, National 17 · Friday, November 9, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com W Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and How the Grinch Stole Christmas after the parade at Encore Oakville Mews Cinemas -- either 11:45 a.m., 1:30 p.m., or 4:30 p.m. to see National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation or at 11:45 a.m. to see How the Grinch Stole Christmas. In lieu of admission, theatre-goers are asked to bring a donation to support the Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre's food drive -- cash, non-perishable food or grocery store gift cards. The Oakville Professional Fire Fighters believe every child deserves at least one special gift and so once again this year a crew will be on hand to accept new, unwrapped toys from parade-goers. Bring an unwrapped gift on parade day. Gifts for older children are especially needed. We remind those bringing gifts to not forget children over the age of 12. Both the Kinsmen Club and the firefighters will have trucks starting downtown about 8:30 a.m. just before the official parade start and volunteers will be accepting donations. The Fun Group of Families and Friends of Falgarwood are celebrating its 19th year of selling red noses for charity at the parade. What started as a group of fun-loving clowns enjoying the parade with their children has grown annually. They hope to boost their total proceeds to more than $30,000 this year. Dressed as clowns, this group sells their famous red noses for $2 on parade day, with all proceeds this year supporting Wellspring-Halton. Make sure when purchasing your nose, you get it from these clowns as this is the only group sanctioned by the parade for red nose sales. They are easily identified by their red sweatshirts or red aprons. The Kinsmen Club of Oakville, the Oakville Professional Fire Fighters and the Fun Group of Families and Friends of Falgarwood are the only groups authorized to accept donations at the parade. Sadly, other groups will sometimes take advantage of the generosity of the parade crowd by soliciting donations for sick children or other non-authorized groups. Please support only those charities approved by the Town of Oakville and the Oakville Santa Claus Parade. The 2012 parade will begin at 9 a.m. The parade will start at Lakeshore Road and Reynolds Street, go west on Lakeshore to Kerr Street, north on Kerr and end at Kerr and Stewart streets.
