He was about to undergo a treatment at the hospital. "He noticed another boy with an IV pole and asked what's wrong with that boy. We had a little conversation and he said he wanted to help. Then we came up with the idea of a little lemonade stand and we thought, `How cute, Jack will maybe raise $5, $10 and then we can give the money back to SickKids," Frers said. "Lo and behold, after putting up a couple of posters, more than 400 people showed up on our front step and over $1,400 was raised." In following years, Jack became more creative and wanted ponies, popcorn and bouncy castles. So, he got them. Jack's Lemonade Stand has grown each year and this year more than 50 children helped run the event, many of whom are patients at the Hospital for Sick Children. "It's so inspiring to me as a mom to see what these kids can do, how kids like Jack have made a difference," Frers said. Julie Harmgardt Julie Harmgardt is the founder and chair of InvisAbilities, which promotes raising awareness, education and support for young adults living with hidden, chronic illness. In her second year of university, Harmgardt was diagnosed with connective tissue disorder, hip dysplasia and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, all conditions that have no visual signs. She noticed signs of trouble as early as high school, when she suffered from hip pain. At the time, she thought it was related to her playing sports. By Grade 12, she had trouble walking up a flight of stairs. She had a surgery during the summer after her first year of university to help alleviate the problem. However, early in her second year things took a turn for the worse. It was raining for three days straight and she couldn't get out of bed. "The original hip pain had spread into every single joint of my body and the fatigue hit me like a Mack truck," she said. "I was a 19-year-old girl living three hours away from home." She said she was bumped from doctor to doctor, often turned away because doctors had no way to help her. She finally found a specialist who diagnosed her. "During this time, I was alone and afraid. Most of my friends left me in the dust. They didn't know what to do or what to say," she said. She heard people say she was too young to be sick or too happy to be feeling bad or too young to have arthritis. Peers and professors were skeptical because she looked well. This led her to champion the underexposed topic of hidden illnesses and founded InvisAbilities in 2009. She said by looking at a person living with a hidden chronic illness one couldn't tell they suffer from anything. She gave examples of such illnesses, including Crohn's disease, fibromyalgia, lupus, Lyme disease, narcolepsy and chronic migraines. She said such conditions affect a person's health but also family life, selfesteem, identity and relationships. Books With No Bounds Books With No Bounds was founded by Oakville sisters Julia, 15, and Emma, 14, Mogus to provide books to First Nations children living in remote Ontario communities. At first, they used their own money to buy secondhand books, but later reached out to the community and managed to collect thousands of books that were shipped to 24 remote, fly-in Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities. "We had determination in our hearts to bring books and improve literacy skills among the First Nations youths in the Nishnawbe Aski Nations," said Emma. The sisters said 90 per cent of the Nishnawbe Aski communities are flyin only and families in these communities live in poverty. "These families can't afford to buy any books and so most children would grow up with maybe one book in their household," Emma said. She said literacy rates are low and suicide rates are high and few youths complete high school. "Our brothers and sisters in the north need our help," Emma said. "We will continue to collect thousands more books so we can send them to these children," Julia added. "We won't stop until there is an enormous supply of books for everyone, including our friends in the north."
