Its founder, Frank Zamuner, 76, at left, first did the swim himself at Brookdale Pool, after swimming helped him battle depression that followed a triple heart bypass surgery in 2005. The swim moved indoors when adopted by Appleby and now it occurs over two days and sees Appleby students challenge those from other high schools to join in fundraising for mental health programs run by Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). To date, the swim has raised more than $100,000 for the Oakville Hospital Foundation and mental health programs. This year, Zamuner himself raised $30,000 and proceeds will support Halton Healthcare Services' Navigator Program for children and youths who need immediate medical care. Above centre, Dr. Kenny Handelman, a psychiatrist at OTMH, participates in the swim.
