Two Heroes at the Ridge By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Iroquois Ridge High School was well represented at the recent Be a Hero awards after students competed in the Be a Voice for Affordable Housing contest. Two Iroquois Ridge students placed in the top five, while the school received the Be a Hero Spirit Award for having the most participants in the contest. The contest had teens aged 14-18 years use creativity to raise awareness about affordable housing and homelessness issues in Halton. "We received an impressive array of submissions for this year's contest and each one demonstrated youths understand the importance of affordable housing and the vital role it plays in building a healthy and sustainable community," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "In Halton, like many other communities across the country, there is a need for more affordable housing. Youths are the leaders of tomorrow so it is important for them to have a voice on this issue." From Iroquois Ridge, Cheryl Joseph took a second place $500 prize for her poem, The Hard Way, and Mayuri Mahendran took a $100 fourth place prize for his book, A Place to Call Home. First place went to Assumption Secondary School in Burlington. Participants were asked to submit a message about affordable housing and homelessness issues in any form of media. Participants met Free the Children and Me to We co-founder Craig Kielburger, guest speaker at the awards ceremony. 9 · Friday, November 30, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com P hotos & Videos FREE WITH SANTA November 30December 24 TuesdayFriday Saturday Sunday Christmas Eve 10am8pm 10am6pm 11am5pm Reservations only ** Donations will be accepted, with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the organization Sleeping Children Around the World.
