www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, December 7, 2012 · 12 Town to revisit new addition to Cenotaph By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Town of Oakville will revisit its recently unveiled War of 1812 additions to the George's Square Cenotaph after a resident voiced concern the men listed on it don't belong there. The War of 1812 veterans were added to the Cenotaph as part of a renovation completed shortly before Remembrance Day. "What was there previously were the names of Oakville veterans from the First and Second World Wars. We wanted to put up a wall that would honour those who have served in other military engagements and conflicts and theatres beyond World War II," said Chris Mark, director of Parks and Open Space with the Town. "One of the reasons we wanted to do this was so we could add something for Colonel (Geoff) Parker who died in Afghanistan." Mark said the Town worked with a committee, including veterans and Oakville Historical Society members, and added a section to the monument bearing the names of two local men who fought in the War of 1812. The renovation cost approximately $60,000. Local history buff Terry Whelan said the renovation was not money well spent however, twice as much hot water there's enough for everyone - sorry Jimmy. Electric When you save $310 and have DAVID LEA / OAKVILLE BEAVER / halton_photog making it right: The Town of Oakville will revisit the newest portion of the Cenotaph in George's Square to ensure its accuracy after receiving a complaint from a local history buff. citing numerous problems with the new memorial wall. First, he said, the War of 1812 veterans listed (John Bassell and George King) are not from the area that would eventually be known as Oakville, which was not founded until 1857. Whelan produced documentation, including a book called Town of York 1793-1815, which indicated Bassell was from York (now Toronto). He also cited the Niagara-At-Large article One Niagara Resident's Ancestral Journey Back to the War of 1812, which seems to indicate King's roots were in East Flamborough (now Burlington). Whelan said it is important for the two men to be remembered, but said their names belong on monuments in their own communities. As for the War of 1812 portion of the George's Square Cenotaph, Whelan said, the only dedication should be to the Mississaugas of the New Credit River First Nations who died defending what would become Canada from the American invasion.
